Is Medicine Failing Women?

What Doctors Aren't Telling you About
Menopause

If You Are A Woman In Your 30’s, 40’s or 50’s, This Blog Post Is Dedicated to You!

Are you experiencing weight gain, sleep disturbances, anxiety, brain fog or noticing new changes in your body? You are not alone! These aren’t just “signs of aging.” They’re often symptoms of perimenopause, the hormonal transition leading up to menopause.

Yet, most healthcare providers don’t discuss perimenopause or instead just tell you that your symptoms are caused by mental health issues. I’m here to tell you it’s not just all in your head.

As a board-certified physician specializing in women’s health and a certified menopause specialist, I’ve seen firsthand how underserved women are when it comes to understanding this critical life stage. It’s time to change the conversation and empower you with real answers.

It’s Not Just All In Your Head

Perimenopause can start as early as your late 30s and continue into your 50s. It’s a time of estrogen and progesterone fluctuations that can cause a wide range of physical and emotional symptoms that many traditional physicians dismiss or misattribute.

Too often, these symptoms are labeled as stress, depression or aging and women are sent off with an antidepressant or told to “wait it out,” when what they really need is perimenopause-informed care.

Here are five of the more commonly known symptoms of Perimenopause and Menopause.

  1. Irregular or heavier periods
  2. Weight gain, especially around the abdomen
  3. Brain fog and memory lapses
  4. Night sweats and hot flashes
  5. Decreased libido

But there are at least 10 other lesser known symptoms of Perimenopause and Menopause that you might not know about.

  1. Sleep Disturbances
  2. Chronic Fatigue
  3. Hair loss
  4. Mood swings, having trouble getting out of bed or anxiousness
  5. Irritability
  6. Joint pain
  7. Palpitations
  8. Skin changes including dry skin and melasma
  9. Vaginal dryness
  10. Frequent UTIs

Here’s What Your Doctor Should Be Doing

  1. Validating Your Symptoms.  You know your body best. If something feels off, you deserve to be heard and taken seriously.
  2. Ordering the Right Labs (But Not Relying Solely on Them) Hormone testing can provide clues, but perimenopause is diagnosed based on symptoms, not just bloodwork.
  3. Offering a Range of Treatment Options.  These may include a holistic approach including lifestyle changes, non-hormonal options, and/or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if appropriate.
  4. Talking to You About Long-Term Health.  Menopause impacts more than your period. It affects your heart, bones, brain, and metabolic health. Preventive care is crucial.

Is Your Doctor A Certified Menopause Specialist?

Sadly, many physicians receive minimal to no training in medical school or residency regarding menopause or perimenopause treatment. That leaves women without the support they need to make informed decisions about their health.

Menopause providers certified by the Menopause Society are uniquely trained to offer specialized, evidence-based care to women experiencing perimenopause and menopause symptoms. Their training ensures they are equipped to address the complex physical, emotional, and hormonal changes that occur during this life stage. Certified providers help navigate treatment options, improve quality of life, and support long-term health by tailoring care to individual needs.
